What Is My Moon Sign? Free Moon Sign Calculator

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your birth date and place below — your birth time is optional. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so for most dates you'll get a clear answer, and if it changed sign on your birthday, you'll see exactly when.

What your Moon sign is

The Moon moves through all twelve signs in about 27 days. In astrology, the sign it occupied at your birth describes your emotional nature — what you need to feel secure, how you process feelings, and what comforts you. Your Sun is your core self; your Moon is your inner world.

Many people find their Moon sign describes them more closely than their Sun sign, because it speaks to private, everyday feelings rather than outward identity. See Sun, Moon and rising signs explained for how the three fit together.

When the birth time matters

The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign, so on most days it doesn't change sign at all. On the days it does, the birth time decides your Moon sign:

  • ·Moon in one sign all day — the date and place are enough.
  • ·Moon changed sign that day — the calculator shows the local time it changed, and both possible signs.
  • ·Birth time close to the change — if you were born within half an hour of it, we flag that too.

How the calculation works

The positions come from standard astronomical algorithms — VSOP87 for the Sun and Jean Meeus's lunar theory for the Moon — accurate to well within a sign boundary. The part most free calculators get wrong is the time zone: we look up the zone for your place of birth and apply the offset that was actually in force on your birth date, including daylight saving and historical changes. You can see the offset used, and change it, before you calculate.

Results use the Western (tropical) zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which currently sits about 24° behind — see tropical vs sidereal for why the two differ.

Reading your Moon sign honestly

Your Moon sign is a way of putting words to emotional patterns, not a rule about how you must feel. Let it prompt reflection — what do you actually need when you're under strain? — and keep what rings true.

Your Moon sign is where the Moon was at your birth, and it describes your emotional nature. Most dates give a clear answer from the date and place alone; on the days the Moon changes sign, your birth time settles it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Moon sign?

Enter your date and place of birth, and your birth time if you know it. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so for most dates the place and date are enough. If the Moon changed sign on your birthday, the calculator tells you the exact time it did, so you can see which side you were born on.

Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?

Usually, yes. On most days the Moon stays in one sign from midnight to midnight, so the date and place settle it. On the days it changes sign, you'll need your birth time — or you can read both descriptions and see which one fits.

What does my Moon sign mean?

In astrology, the Moon sign describes your emotional nature — what you need to feel safe, how you react under pressure, and what comforts you. Where the Sun is your core self, the Moon is your inner world. It's read alongside your Sun and rising sign rather than on its own.

Why do I need my place of birth for a Moon sign?

Mainly for the time zone. Your birth date and time are local clock times, and the calculator needs the offset in force at your birthplace on that date to know the exact moment you were born. Near a sign change, an hour's difference can change the answer.
