Court Cards
Definition
The Page, Knight, Queen, and King of each of the four tarot suits — sixteen cards in total. They typically represent people in your life, or roles and facets of personality, expressed through their suit's energy.
The court cards are the “people” of the tarot — the Page, Knight, Queen, and King within each of the four suits of the Minor Arcana. With four courts per suit, there are sixteen in all.
They usually represent a person in your life, or a role or facet of yourself, coloured by their suit. The four ranks describe a kind of progression:
- Page — the learner or messenger: fresh, curious, still discovering the suit’s theme.
- Knight — the doer: active and driven, pursuing the suit’s energy (sometimes to excess).
- Queen — inner mastery: nurturing and embodying the suit’s energy with depth.
- King — outer mastery: authoritative, directing the suit’s energy in the world.
So the Queen of Cups suggests emotional depth and care, while the King of Swords suggests clear, authoritative thinking.
